Despicable Me 2 short trailer analysis by Saqib Younis

http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi245343769/
Despicable Me 2 is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated adventure comedy film and the sequel to the 2010 animated film Despicable Me. Produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures, both films are directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, and written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Steve Carell, Russell Brand, and Miranda Cosgrove reprise their roles. Kristen Wiig, who played Miss Hattie in the first film, voices agent Lucy Wilde. New cast members include Benjamin Bratt as Eduardo and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom, head of the Anti-Villain League. The trailer is about 2:34 minuets long and u don’t find out what the movie is about until about 2:10 into the movie which a few seconds after the name of the movie is shown this is done so that the viewer gets an idea of the plot which is quite different to the first movie. The music in the trailer is a hip hop track by Eminem and it continually says “guess whose back”. This is used to try and make the sequel seem like a highly anticipated return. I gave also noticed the use of rap music in comedy trailers in such movies like “the worlds end” and “the watch”. I believe this is don e due to the fact that it gives a less serious effect to the movie as rap music seemingly is meant to upbeat however not really taken seriously its almost making the trailer look more like a comedy as it shows these musical choice which are associated with gangsters who think they are mean and feared, when in this trailer it relates to a children’s animated movie. The comedy features in this movie are majority aimed towards kid when the yellow minions of the main character are almost childlike as they are amused by such words as Ramsbottom which they repeat the bottom part this also makes the child within adults laugh to as its childish but funny. Also in this trailer there is situations that also relate to children for example after he has been put in the boot of the car and is let out instead of worrying about the fact of being locked up in a boot he is seemingly more fazed by the fact he had pins and needles which is an emotion in which children can relate too. Children can’t relate to being locked in a boot or in an underground secret agent base. In this trailer there is no use of a voiceover as it uses transcript form the movie. In this trailer there tends to be plenty of long shots of scenes in the movie the montage edit does not seem to be that quick unlike usual comedy trailers In conclusion the trailer is a typical modernised movie trailer which the comedy features are w=quite high and the plot of the movie is produced the use of rap music and childish comedy is good for a movie of this so it does not just entertain the children it entertains the parents and an elder audience as it produces the inner child within the adult.

IronMan3 trailer analysis by Saqib Younis

At the very Beginning of the Iron Man 3 theatrical trailer starts with a sunset with an exaggerated diegetic sound of a helicopter. Then there is a voice over of the main character tony stark introducing himself however there is a very low beat depressing non diegetic sound this gives a contrast to what the viewer usually expects with Iron Man as he is usually a upbeat cocky superhero.

Then briefly there is the familiar comic book superhero Marvel sign in which are the viewer to make the reader still know that it is a Marvel produced movie however it is a dark film unlike the majority of their movies.
It then cuts to a long establishing shot of the white house in which there is a voiceover of the president in which there is a number of fade shots of different scenes as he is mentioning he is going to protect the country. At this point the is a long shot of the Iron Patriot and him saluting the president this indicates to the viewer that the Iron Patriot is the hero not Iron Man.
Then there is a disruption in the trailer in which there is an explosion and people panicking this goes along with Todorovs theory that narratives follow a 3 part structure the firstly where everything is balances i.e. at the beginning in which Tony Stark is in his armoury with his suits like normal then there is a close up of his face in which he looks worried and cant “sleep”. The main disruption is the Mandarin who causes the explosion and is seen as an international terrorist. In all obviousness the trailer does not reveal the solution to the new equilibrium.
After the explosion there is a diegetic voice over of a verse in the film of the mandarin saying “you won’t see me coming”. At this time there are clips of destruction showing the intensity of the villain. So this goes with Vladimir Propp’s theory in which he has set out the character types in theory the hero which is obviously Iron Man, the villain which is the Mandarin and the princess type which is Tony Stark wife and the only real love of his life Pepper Potts, which is the reason he has to defeat the villain to stop the risk from Pepper from getting hurt.
Then the voiceover of the Mandarin continues in which there is a close up shot of his face in a very dark shadow which shows that he is evil and this also agrees with Claude Levi Strauss theory of binary oppositions the reason being this is that it has the expected binary opposition of good vs. evil and dark vs. light as majority of the times throughout the trailer Tony Stark is always surrounded by a light room and the Mandarin is in a dark room.

Then after this is one of the key parts of this theatrical trailer is the destruction of Tony Starkes Iron Man suits which creates suspense as the once known to be virtually indestructible iron man armour is destroyed.
The big title page that mentioned the release date is shown after all the explosions and destruction this is to attract the viewer as the explosion of Tony Starks Malibu mansion  is definatly a serious thing and on May 3rd the audience can see how and what happens after this. It connotes that this terrorist does not care about iron man or the consequences he shall pay for this he is not scared of the fairly intimidating figure of iron man this shows that maybe he has met his match.

After this a voice over of Tony Starke speaking begins it seems that It is using a quote from the movie this dialect is basically saying he is not “afraid” of this Mandarin and then the significant figure of the Iron Man suit of armour appears in a destructive background they did this to connote that Iron Man will basically save the day one way or another, In his human form or as the Iron man.
The title of the film comes toward the end of the trailer as soon as Tony Starke jumps into one of his iron man suits this gives the sense that he will save the day and the character that everyone has come to love is one who saves the day. The title page of the name of the movie is very simple it has the Iron man name in red which denotes the color of his usual Armour and the number 3 in the arc reactor which is a significant factor about iron man that he does not have a heart literally
At the end of the trailer there is a long shot of a lot of Iron Man suits so that the audience get a sense of drama and something they are not used to. There is normally only ever one iron man now there are a number of armored suits.
Finally throughout the trailer there are numerous fade effects used as they show scenes that leave unanswered questions. This to the audience creates a lot of mystery and tension and will make them want to see the movie. Also due to the face that it is the theatrical trailer denotes more drama and I believe that this aided Iron Man 3 to be the most successful film in 2013 so far. Below are some of the shots that create mystery.

This is a long shot of Ironman saving a woman unknown to the public

Ironman in a overthe top shot of him holding on as he does not
want to fall into what looks like destructive water.

This is twoman long shot of two people a child and a man
looking at a memorial for the dead that have passed
away.

This is a medium long shot of Pepper Potts in a very destructive background
however she does not looked scaed but angry this could connote maybe she has
something about her that the viewer does not know
