shoot 3 evaluation by Saqib Younis

On Sunday morning at 10:30 AM we shot the fire station shoot, this was organized by our director Emma Taylor through previous links with Rawtenstall fire station.

We began with a brief talk with the fire man and discussed ideas with them and gave them a brief synopsis with the fireman. After this we went outside where we filmed the fire man ride around in their fire truck with the sirens on, Emma and Abi were using a camera to film the shot and Tom was also filming from a different angle to give us a variety of shots. My role was to capture the behind the scene pictures and I managed to get loads of good behind the scenes pictures as seen in my blog.

After this the fire man offered to take a door of a wrecked vehicle for us. This was a great idea as it will give us many options when we edit our trailer. Through the cutting of of the door we filmed the removal of the equipment from the fire truck then the removal of the door. Tom shot the scene from a different angle this gives us numerous shots from different angles so we have a selections of shots to choose from.

There weren't many problems in countered through the shoot, the only one was that the camera in which I was taking pictures on battery died so I then had to use a iPhone which was not ideal however it still worked very effectively and the pictures turned out to be great.

Overall the shoot was a success there was only a minor speed bump in the problems with he camera but other than that the filming ran smoothly.

Productions companys by Saqib Younis

Broken coal was a production company created by our director and her brother, its a company which has been used before by our director. The reason in which we decided used this production as our director Emma had previously filmed some video under this banner a couple very dark one including one which involved a kidnapping of a child similar to our production. Also this adds to the fact that our film is a thriller as this production company relates to this.
The other production company which we used was DreamWorks, the key reason which we used this was due the fact that one of the films which was very similar to our trailer was I Am Number Four. This was a movie with similar traits of our trailer such as the teenager who possessed super natural power as his was the ability to shoot lights and weapons from himself however our main character has tele kinises power. SO they main reason which we chose DreamWorks was due to the fact it was played a part in creating a film which fits the description of our creation. So this overall supports the thriller element in which we want our trailer to be associated with. Normally DreamWorks is not familiarized with dark thrillers as it most famously linked with its production of the Shrek franchise, however all production companies make acceptions to certain films, this is the case with our trailer.

Shoot 2 evaluation by Saqib Younis

My role through the second shoot which was filmed on a Saturday was that I was doing the behind the scene filming however i did arrive half an hour late as the bus arrived at 9.10 am on Saturday as this was the earliest time I could catch the bus to bury and I arrived at the shoot at 10.30 am. When I arrived the make up of the actor was being done in total the make up took up to an hour to complete. As soon as I arrived we began to set up the lighting and camera also the room in which we shot in was already pretty much set all that was needed to be done was positioning of the chair used and also to make sure we did not get the lights in the shot. My role in this shoot was to record the behind the scenes, in the shoot I managed to get numerous shots of both Abi and Emma shooting the actual footage.

Throughout the shoot there weren't many problems, the only one which I could think of was the space that was available as the location which we shot at was very small but it had to like this to create the feel and perfect shoot that we wanted.

The director got numerous shots of the actor who in this scene looked as if she had been tortured. Throughout the shoot I were filming the behind the scenes of all the work being put in by the rest of the production team and also the actors.

After the filming there was a very small photo shoot which took place immediately after the filming, the reason there was a photo shoot as the scene we had shot in felt a perfect place for us to shoot the poster cover for the trailer.

The shoot was a success everyone played a big part and the film we took away was very convenient for our production.

Risk Assesment

A risk assessment is simply a careful examination of what, in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether you have taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm. Workers and others have a right to be protected from harm caused by a failure to take reasonable control measures. Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect your business too if output is lost, machinery is damaged, insurance costs increase or you have to go to court. You are legally required to assess the risks in your workplace so that you put in place a plan to control the risks.

The risk assessments of the party scene were few but were easy to avoid. The first risk was when we set up the crane shot this was a risk due to the fact it had previously been raining so the balcony was very slippery and handling a heavy piece of equipment like a crane was quite dangerous however it was easily manageable as two people set up slow and carefully and avoided all risks.  Other than this there wasn’t too much risk only others were the use of party poppers in which people could have hit other people in the eye yet this was very unlikely and did not happen.

In the torture scene the risks were that when Clare was tied up that we made sure that the rags were not on too tight which would cut the blood circulation. Also in the makeup there was a use of wax which gave a blood effect and Clare had to avoid this touching her hair as it would stick to it.  This was taking care due to extreme precaution and this was easily avoided.
The risk in the field and wood scene were also minimal excluding the possibility of it raining and all the equipment getting wet which would have been very costly however it was easily avoided as we planned it when it was not raining using the weather forecast.

The Classroom scene only had only one risk which involved which was the scene in which Sophie who played Zara when she threw the table and chair in one of the shots. This was avoided as the cast and crew kept a reasonable distance.

In conclusion all the risk in these four scene were miniscule however if not taking seriously could have had some consequences, however we did take the right step and method to avoid all possible problems and throughout the production no one was injured and no equipment was damaged.

 Explosion shoot

Risk Assessments
There are always risks on set, whether it’s cables from lighting or tripping hazards, some scenes have more risk than others, so extra precautions have to be in place to make sure it’s a safe environment for both the actors and crew to be in.
Explosion
As we filmed a real explosion we had to think carefully about the safety for all the people involved. As the explosion was going to be made by an licensed and experienced militia company who have all the relevant legal and safety checks we are sure that everything would go to plan as expected. Ted Lewis and his Lancashire Militia team have been performing re-enactments all over the UK for many years and Ted also makes explosions for professional production companies which have included him blowing up helicopters, blowing up houses and doing run-away explosions. Ted and I planned out the explosion beforehand, talking about what would be possible in the safest environment. For instance, when Grace falls onto the floor, there would be cushions/padding for her to fall onto so she wouldn’t hurt herself. She would also start running from a ‘safe point’ where she will not get hit by the flames and blast of the explosion.
Having worked with Ted previously, I have seen and signed the necessary health and safety documents to work with him and he helped us do this explosion as a favor to me as I have filmed his re-enactments before during his ‘UK Pirate Re-enactment Tour’.

Letter to the fire station by Emma Taylor

                                                                                                                        BB4 8QJ

Dear Sir/Madam,

After having a very interesting tour of the Fire Station with Gary with the 38th Rossendale Beaver Scouts section on the 9th October, I spoke to him regarding filming for my A Level media course (studying at BRGS Sixth Form) at the Fire Station, which he said would be possible to do. It would be fantastic to have shots of the fire engine in our project!

I understand you are busy, and that if you have a call out, you would have to attend to the incident. If possible, could we possibly spare one hour for filming, I would be very grateful. Hopefully, we would be filming the engine outside of the station (in the car park) recording the sound of the siren and getting images of the flashing lights, and possibly a fire fighter in uniform getting an axe out of the fire engine. It would be great if we could have other shots of those destroyed cars you have outside the station that you practice on.

If you could let me know what is possible to do on my mobile: 07749923033 or on my home phone: 01706 227933, I and my team would be grateful.

Our plan for our film to be marked for coursework is a feature film trailer, and we would of course give you credit on the project and a copy of the finished production.

Once again, I thank you for the fantastic talk and experience at your Fire Station, both the Beavers and all the leaders enjoyed themselves.

 Yours faithfully,

Emma Taylor

Why our film trailer would be a mid-budget film? by Saqib Younis

The reason which why our film would be a mid-budget film is the fact that similar coming to age movies and that have similar stories and effect such as I am number four which was a film about a number one selling novel the production budget was around $60 million according to box office mojo. The other film which has a similar story to our trailer however did not possess many special affect unlike I am number four which had supernatural characters, is called Abduction which was maybe a mid to low budget film which cost around $35 million.

Grace Character Profile by Abigail Ford

Character Profile Name of character: Grace
Age: 17
Upbringing: Perfect family home. Gets everything she wants but isn’t spoilt as we want to like the character. Single child. Father's a business man, mother is a house wife. Fairly large 4 bedroom family home, obviously have money. Was sent to after school clubs such as swimming. We later find that she is adopted and was brought up to work for the government. Never knew what her dad did, just thought he was high up, find out later he is an agent for the government and her mum’s an ex spy.
Personality: Friendly and polite to people. Isn’t shy but doesn’t particularly talk much. Best friends with Zara, can tell that this is because Zara draws attention to herself and therefore away from Grace, which Grace likes. Moderately intelligent, predicted B’s. On the outside it doesn’t appear that she has a complex interesting life. Has history with Charlie, broken up, feelings are still obviously there though. Appearance: Blonde wavy hair, pretty face but doesn’t do much with it, wouldn’t look twice. Wears floral headbands which connote innocence, however does flicks with her eyeliner suggesting a slightly darker punky side, probably influenced by Zara. Simple ear-piercing and rest of makeup is natural.
Dress Codes
Grace is our eponymous hero, which contradicts most films as usually the hero is male, breaking gender stereotypes. We wanted her to be unlike most female heroes, who usually go for a fem-me fettle, promiscuous look, as seen in Lara Croft and Kill Bill. Instead, we wanted to show that she is quite feminine, the stereotypical teenage girl. As such, we decided that she should dress in light pale clothes and iconically wear flowers in her hair, to connote innocence and naivety. However, once she has been kidnapped and is having to fight from danger, we wanted her pretty clothes to be covered in mud and blood, and to be slightly ripped. Firstly, this is continuity; she wouldn’t look perfect after been held captive for days and after running away. This also connotes that her original innocence and naivety has gone, as she is now far more aware of her powers and the dangers these can bring. It also shows that her character is stronger, as she has become a fighter after struggling for her life. An example of this is Rose Tyler from Doctor Who. Rose, a girl from East-end London, typically wore pink t-shirts and feminine makeup, however, the more she travels with the Doctor, introduces new aspects to her wardrobe such as a leather jacket, to show character change with the more she learns about the world, however, an aspect of girlishness was still apparent. Another example is Cady from Mean Girls. While she was not always feminine, Cady did show character development through wardrobe change. At first, she was an awkward teenage girl who didn’t know the do’s and don’ts of fashion. However, the more popular she becomes and aware of “girl world” we see that her clothes become more fashionable and match those of her friends. She also introduces more feminine colours to her wardrobe such as red and pink.
